GENERAL ANESTHESIA / SEDATION – PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS
Providing our patients with the finest possible surgical care available is our ongoing commitment. We take pride in ensuring a positive and comfortable experience while you are under our care. The following instructions will help us provide you with the high-quality treatment you deserve. These instructions are specifically for patients undergoing intravenous (IV) anesthesia:
1. FOR YOUR SAFETY, DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING FOR SIX (6) HOURS PRIOR TO YOUR SURGERY.
2. Do not consume alcohol or smoke for 24 hours before your procedure. For optimal healing, please stop smoking at least two (2) weeks prior to your surgery date.
3. If you take routine oral medications, contact us before your surgery for specific instructions. In general, unless otherwise directed by Dr. Dolan, you may take your usual morning medications with a small sip of water at least two (2) hours before surgery. It is especially important to consult us or your physician regarding diabetic medications.
4. Do not drive yourself to your appointment. You must bring a responsible adult who can stay at the office during your procedure, receive postoperative instructions, drive you home, and care for you after surgery. You may not drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia. Your surgery will be rescheduled if your ride is not present at the time of surgery.
5. Do not wear contact lenses. Wear clothing that is loose around your neck and has short sleeves or sleeves that can be easily rolled up. Avoid high heels, colored nail polish, makeup, or jewelry.
6. Please brush your teeth before arriving. If you use mouthwash, do not swallow it.
7. If you develop a cough, cold, chest congestion, or feel unwell, contact our office as we may need to reschedule your surgery.
8. If you experience symptoms such as a sore throat, stomachache, or upset bowels, please notify our office. We may need to postpone your procedure.
